HUMMINGBIRD ANGEL
End of July after the museum,
we arrive home and the air is cooler
with storm clouds thundering quietly.
Near the rosemary bush, a hummingbird
zooms towards us, hovering close enough
I’m gazing at her tiny wings, which beat
the air and sadness right out of me–
another imaginal rejection gone.
My partner races inside to fetch her feeder,
but I stand still, obliterated by grace.
Oh dear ruby-throated angel, thank you,
your quiet wings droning loud enough
to open my heart again, so alive,
so relieved, so healed by wonder.
